Trump is appealing the denial of immunity in the election interference case.

Former US President Donald Trump will appeal a Washington appeals court ruling that denied him legal immunity in an election interference case, his campaign said.

“President Trump respectfully dissents from the District of Columbia Court’s decision and will appeal it in the interest of protecting the presidency and the Constitution,” the press release said.

Trump has insisted he cannot be tried for actions dating back to his time as US president, including the centerpiece of the trial – the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the Capitol by his supporters in an attempt to disrupt Congress’ certification of his Democratic rival Joe Biden’s presidential election victory.

Trump’s position did not find support in the Washington District Court, where the case is being heard; on Tuesday, an attempt to appeal the lower court’s decision was rejected by the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
