The death toll from forest fires in Chile has risen to 51, Interior Minister Carolina Toa said.

On Saturday, the country’s President Gabriel Borich reported 46 deaths.

“In the hours since the president spoke, five more people have died,” Toa said.

The minister’s statement was broadcast on the Chilean government’s Youtube channel.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Chile reported that there are 92 fires throughout the country, 29 of them are being extinguished, and another 40 are under control. Chilean President Gabriel Boric previously declared a state of emergency in the Valparaiso region due to forest fires.
