President of Moldova Maia Sandu, in order to stay in power, may try to change the constitution, after which the leader of the republic will be elected not by direct voting of the citizens of the republic, but by parliament, ex-president of Moldova, leader of the opposition Party of Socialists Igor Dodon said on Friday.

The President of Moldova is elected by popular vote for a term of four years. The next presidential elections in Moldova will take place in 2024.

“It is important to understand how the president will be elected in 2024, whether Maia Sandu will try to change the procedure. You can expect anything from her. She can start a war in order to stay in office, change the constitution. But she has already taken several specific actions “to fall under the usurpation of power in the republic. This is the biggest crime and has no statute of limitations,” Dodon said at a briefing.

In his opinion, if Sandu nevertheless tries to change the constitution in order to stay in power, this will unite all the political forces that are now criticizing each other. “By the way, it is easier to remove a president elected in parliament through parliament; a directly elected president can only be removed through a referendum,” Dodon noted.

In Moldova, the opposition has been holding anti-government protests for more than a year, insisting on the resignation of the Cabinet and President Maia Sandu, who is the informal leader of the ruling Action and Solidarity party. The demonstrators accuse the country’s authorities of failing to cope with the crisis in the economy and energy sector, as well as putting pressure on the opposition. As a result of the actions of the authorities in the country, the opposition party “Shor” was banned; representatives of a number of other polyfluoric groups, including the Socialist Party, the “Renaissance” party, and the “Chance” party regularly face searches and detention of their supporters.
