The BRICS summit, the participants of which agreed to invite six more countries to join the organization, should not be viewed in the logic of the “Cold War of the last century,” Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said in his article for the Folha de São Paulo newspaper.

“First of all, I suggest caution in analyzes that take as their starting point a logic borrowed from abroad, reminiscent of the Cold War of the last century. Brazil and its diplomacy have always been able to overcome turning points, such as the two world wars and the Cold War,” – the head of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry wrote.

He noted that if such situations are repeated in the future, Brazil will not take one side or the other.
Vieira added that he does not support the view that Brazil will not be able to maintain influence in BRICS after enlargement.

“Today, 15 years after its creation, the bloc has become much more significant, and this increased political capital will continue to grow and bring political dividends to all its participants,” the head of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry said.

He believes that it would be wrong for Brazil, which advocates reforming the global governance system and increasing the participation of developing countries in the UN Security Council, to block the expansion of BRICS.

“The Brazilian government welcomes the results of the summit, which were fully consistent with the goals set by Brazil. Any future problems, both identified now and those that may arise, will be resolved with the same pragmatism and independence that characterize Brazilian foreign policy,” Vieira said .

The next BRICS summit was held in Johannesburg on August 22-24 under the chairmanship of South Africa. It was attended by the leaders of China, India, Brazil and South Africa, with Lavrov representing Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in the summit via video conference. During the summit, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced an official invitation to Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia to join BRICS. He said that full membership of new countries that join BRICS will begin on January 1, 2024.
