NATO called on Russia to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the CFE Treaty.

NATO called on Russia to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), the alliance said in a statement.

Earlier, Russia notified all the states parties to the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe of its decision to withdraw from it, this will happen on November 7.

“The Allies urge Russia to honor its commitments and obligations, to use the remaining time before the exit to reconsider its decision,” NATO said in a statement.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law denouncing the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.

The CFE Treaty was signed in Paris in 1990, and in 1999 an updated version of the treaty was signed at the OSCE summit in Istanbul. The adapted treaty was ratified by only four countries – Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine. In 2007, Russia suspended its participation in the CFE Treaty “until the NATO countries ratify the Agreement on Adaptation and begin to implement this document in good faith.”
