More than 100,000 people in the UK have said they will not pay their gas and electricity bills from October to protest the government’s inaction in light of rising electricity prices in the country. This was announced on Thursday by the organizers of the public campaign Don’t Pay UK (“Don’t pay, Great Britain”).

“In just a few weeks, more than 100,000 members of our movement across the country have united. We no longer want to pay for the profits of energy companies,” the initiators of the campaign, launched in June, said in a statement.

As the organizers previously noted, the Don’t Pay UK action will be put into practice only if by October 1 more than 1 million Britons express a desire to join the protest.

On April 1, against the backdrop of a rise in gas prices on the world market, the UK raised the upper limit on electricity prices, after which the average annual bill for a British household using both electricity and gas rose by 54%, to a record high of £ 1.97 thousand ($2.4 thousand).

Earlier, the energy regulator of the United Kingdom did not rule out that in autumn this figure could reach £2.75-3 thousand ($3.3-3.6 thousand), and independent experts predict an even greater rise in prices up to £5 thousand ( $6 thousand).
