The United States admitted that the country’s debts to the UN interfere with the influence on the organization

The huge US debt to the UN hinders the ability of the States to influence the activities of the organization, said US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield at a hearing in the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The diplomat was asked how much the US debt to the UN hinders.

“Every day I face this problem in New York. We are put in a position where we have to compete with our rivals in the ability to influence the activities of the UN, appoint capable staff to the UN,” said Thomas-Greenfield.

“We are publicly reminded and trying to shame – but we are not ashamed – that we have such a big debt, such a big debt in the UN. So we really need to solve this problem if we want to be able to compete with our opponents,” the permanent representative said.

Every niche the US leaves unfilled in the organization is “a space that China is trying to fill,” she said.

“They take any vacant place that we leave. This concerns staffing the UN, funding programs for the work of young employees. The Chinese have more than 400 of these young people in the UN,” she said.
