The President of Finland said that it is possible to resolve the situation on NATO membership with Turkey

Sweden and Finland face a common challenge over Turkey’s opposition to Nordic NATO membership. But this situation can be resolved, said Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, who is in Stockholm on a state visit, and delivered a speech in the Swedish parliament entitled “A Responsible, Strong and Stable Northern Region.”

“Turkey’s statements have changed very quickly and become tougher in recent days, but I am sure that we will resolve the situation through constructive negotiations,” he stressed.

The politician called the entry of neighboring countries into the alliance historic.

“Sweden and Finland are taking historic steps together. Sweden and Finland’s NATO membership will enhance security and strengthen a responsible, strong and stable Scandinavian region. We are taking these historic steps because of a brutal war,” he says.

According to Niinistö, the security situation for the two countries allegedly changed due to the Russian operation in Ukraine.

“We took the world for granted. On February 24, the peace was broken. Our old ways of acting no longer fit the new situation,” he said.
