The group of Seven’s leaders have met in Cornwall on Saturday. the personal meeting between the French President and the British prime minister was dedicated to the consequences of Brexit, mostly. Emmanuel Macron hopes the UK ‘keep its word’ in the frame of a Brexit agreement, Reuters reports.
The UK PM Johnson met French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the G7 summit. After the Brexit, Brussels wasn’t totally happy about the kingdom’s failure to implement border checks on goods.
As an illustration, President Macron on Saturday told Mr Johnson to stick to the terms of the Brexit deal he signed with Europe, amid a standoff over new trading arrangements in Northern Ireland.
According to Macron, the UK should “keep its word” and abide by the terms of the deal he signed with the EU just six months ago.
Meantime, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen who also attended the G7 are expected to deliver the same message to the British prime minister.
The row over the so-called Northern Ireland protocol agreed separately to the Brexit deal, has dogged the showpiece G7 summit in Cornwall.
The French leader also blasted England and said it was “not serious to want to revisit, in the month of July, what we finalised after years of work in December”.
“I believe in the power of treaties. I believe in seriousness. Nothing is renegotiable. Everything is applicable,” he stressed on Thursday.
Commenting on the situation, the EC has threatened reprisals, including targeted tariffs, if it does so, sparking talk in the UK press of a “sausage war” with Europe. Johnson played down any rift after talks with the US leader on Thursday, insisting Mr Biden did not sound the alarm over the issue.
The UK PM said there was “absolutely common ground” on all sides in upholding the landmark 1998 peace deal that ended three decades of violence over British rule in Northern Ireland.
