US seeks change in Iran’s behaviour, not regime change

The United States ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called the international community to speak out on Iran issue, she is urging United Nations to “speak out” on the anti-government protests rocking Iran. In fact, the US seeks change in Iran’s behaviour, not regime change, The National reports.

Nikky Hailey, the US envoy to the UN, urges for the UN to “speak out” on the Iran situation amidst the protests rocking the Middle East country for a sixth consecutive day. The similar protest wave was registered in Iran in 2009, so, the diplomats should be ready to draw a conclusion.

“The freedoms that are enshrined in the United Nations Charter are under attack in Iran. Dozens have already been killed. Hundreds have been arrested,”

Nikki Haley stated on Tuesday. She also added that if the Iranian dictatorship’s history is any guide, the US and other UN members can expect more outrageous abuses in the days to come.

“The UN must speak out,”

she demanded.

Additionally, the US will call for an emergency United Nations session in New York and of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. If the people of Iran is crying out for freedom, they must stand with their cause and they will need help.

‘ The international community made the mistake of failing to do that in 2009. We must not make that mistake again,’

Mrs Hailey said, describing as “complete nonsense” statements by Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei that the protests, which erupted on December 28, were being provoked by Tehran’s “enemies”.

The recent wave of the protests resulted in the detaining of 450 people in Tehran, many more Iranians are in other areas since the protests broke out last week. At least 21 were killed since December, 28.

Meanwhile, both Turkish and Russian foreign ministers have warned against interference in Iranian affairs.

“Interference which is destabilizing is unacceptable,”

said official Moscow.
