Voting in parliamentary elections has ended in Syria.

Voting in the parliamentary elections in Syria has ended and the counting of votes has begun, the Syrian state agency SANA reports, citing a statement by the Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections.

Previously, voting was extended by two hours – until 21.00 local time.

“The polling stations have closed and the counting of votes in the elections to the People’s Council has begun,” the statement said.

On Monday, Syria held elections to the People’s Council (parliament). More than 1.5 thousand candidates competed for 250 seats in the Syrian parliament. There were over 8.1 thousand polling stations throughout the country. The current parliamentary elections are the fourth for Syria since the start of the armed conflict in the country in 2011.
