US authorities have asked social network X for data on violations in Brazil.

The owner of the social network X, American entrepreneur Elon Musk, said that the social network received a request from the US House of Representatives to provide data on illegal activities in Brazil, which number in the hundreds, amid a conflict with the Brazilian authorities over the issue of Internet censorship.

Previously, Musk said that amid a conflict with the Brazilian authorities over issues of censorship and disinformation on the Internet, his Brazilian employees were threatened with arrest.

“X just received an inquiry from the US House of Representatives regarding actions taken in Brazil that violate Brazilian law. There were hundreds, if not thousands of them. This is getting spicy,” Musk wrote on X’s social network.

Previously, Musk suggested that Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes resign due to allegedly consistent violations of his own constitution, promising to publish his requests to remove materials from the social network. A court in Brazil ordered an investigation into Musk following allegations against a judge.

The Brazilian government is actively fighting the spread of fake news on social networks. A bill to combat the spread of fake news has been pending in parliament since last year, which would criminalize the publication of disinformation using bots. It obliges companies providing digital services to have a physical representative in the country, introduces liability for them for promoting fakes created by third parties, requires the introduction of transparent rules for content moderation, and introduces fees for search engines for the use of journalistic materials.

Traditional Brazilian media actively support the adoption of the bill; their opponents are Internet companies that deny the existence of their own interests.
