Syria safe zone is a special task for the National Security Council of Turkey. As Yenisafak reported on Tuesday, in northern Iraqi provinces, the anti-terror Claw operations will be continued until the region is cleared of terrorists.
Turkey recognizes its responsibility for maintaining the stability and security in Syria’s safe zone. Tayyip Erdogan, the National Security Council’s head, said Turkey intends to strengthen its efforts to create a safe zone in northern Syria.
Along with its military presence, Turkey understands the importance of the humanitarian aspect – for Syrians who are returning to their homes.
“Turkey will further strengthen its sincere efforts to realize the safe zone project,” the NSC chairman Erdogan said on Monday following the meeting at the presidential complex in Ankara.
Maintaining the safe zone in northern Syria is vital for the region’s safety
The setting up a safe zone in northern Syria became a result of the long discussions between the Turkish and U.S. military officials. Since August, the peace corridor facilitates the movement of displaced Syrians who decided to return home. Additionally, both sides agreed to establish a joint operations centre in Syria.
For Turkey, it is important to clear the zone of the terrorist YPG/PKK, a group the U.S. has sometimes been allied with. Now, PKK listed as the terrorists for Turkey, the US, and the EU. The Operation Claw against the PKK terror group in the Hakurk region of northern Iraq launched.
The council stated that Turkey is determined to continue activities in Eastern Mediterranean within the framework of its continental shelf — which is registered with the United Nations — and agreements with Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
