Donald Trump’s lawyers arrived at the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith, who oversees investigations against the former US president, for a meeting that may be related to new charges.

Trump could soon be charged in connection with the storming of the Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021.

“Trump attorneys John Lauro and Todd Blanche are expected to meet with Smith’s team after receiving a letter warning that Trump is the target of the Special Counsel’s ongoing investigation into attempts to change the 2020 election,” ABC News reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The House of Representatives, which had been investigating January 6 during the Democratic majority, recommended that the Justice Department file a number of charges against Trump, including sedition.

Trump himself maintains his innocence.

On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters attacked the Capitol, blocking Congress for several hours. As a result of the riots, a protester and a policeman were killed, three more died from causes not related to violence. After the protesters were expelled from the building, congressmen approved the victory of Joe Bidenan in the presidential election. Subsequently, hundreds of people in the United States were arrested by law enforcement on charges related to their participation in the assault.
