The Foreign Ministry says that there can be no talk of a peace treaty with Japan

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the topic of a peace treaty with Japan is closed for Russia.

“As for the topic of the peace treaty, as you know, it is closed for us,” she said at the briefing.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said on January 7 that the Tokyo government is committed to concluding a peace treaty with Moscow. As Prime Minister Fumio Kishida noted at a parliamentary hearing the next day, Japan would continue to negotiate to clarify ownership of the “Northern Territories,” as the country calls Kunashir, Habomai, Shikotan and Iturup.

Japan believes that it has the right to claim the four islands of the Kuril chain, although following the results of the Second World War they became the territory of the USSR. Moscow’s position is that Russian sovereignty over them is beyond question.
