The death toll from a major fire in northern China has risen to 25 people.

The death toll from a major fire at a coal plant in northern China’s Shanxi province has reached 25, China Central Television reported on Thursday.

Previously, 19 people were reported dead, as well as 51 hospitalized.


The fire started on Thursday at 6.50 local time on the second floor of a four-story building of the private company Yongju coal mine in the Lishi district of Luliang city district.


As of now, firefighters have managed to bring the fire under control. However, it is still unknown how many people were in the building at the time of the fire, and the search and rescue operation continues.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established; an investigation is underway.
