The number of victims as a result of the collapse of the roof of a church in the Mexican city of Ciudad Madero (Tamaulipas state) has increased to 60, according to updated information from the regional Ministry of Security on the social network X.
It is also reported that the number of victims of the tragedy has increased to ten. Earlier it was reported about nine dead and 40 injured.
“10 dead and 60 injured are reported, of whom 23 are hospitalized, two with serious injuries,” the press service of the Tamaulipas Ministry of Security said in a statement.
According to local media, the roof of a church in the coastal city of Ciudad Madero in the southern state of Tamaulipas collapsed during a baptism ceremony; the exact number of parishioners and church ministers who were inside the building is unknown. According to the state Department of Safety, the emergency may have occurred due to a “structural failure.” Debris clearing continues at the scene.
Tamaulipas Governor Americo Villareal expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the local community and sent the heads of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs, civil protection and the Ministry of Health to coordinate the rescue efforts.
