Candidate for German Chancellor from the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, criticized the German Foreign Ministry for fully supporting one of the US presidential candidates in the last election – Democratic Party representative Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost to Republican Donald Trump.
⠀
“The Federal Government should have been preparing for his (Donald Trump’s) re-election. Instead, the Foreign Office tweeted in support of Kamala Harris, taking a very one-sided position. Trump has a long memory. The current Federal Government will no longer be heard the new administration. (German Chancellor Olaf) Scholz is now a lame duck at the international level,” Merz said.
⠀
According to the candidate for chancellor, Germany has not yet sufficiently articulated its interests. Merz said he wants to change this and work with the Americans to achieve mutual benefits.
⠀
“Trump would call it a deal,” Merz said.
⠀
Trump, who already served as US President from 2017-2021, won the presidential election on November 5. He became the first US politician since the 19th century to return to the White House after a four-year break. Trump’s victory was announced by all the leading media outlets involved in counting votes: the Associated Press, Fox News, CNN, NBC, ABC and CBS.
⠀
Democratic candidate Harris spoke to supporters and said she would admit defeat, and current US President Joe Biden spoke with Trump and congratulated him.
