Thailand is ready to begin negotiations on free trade with the EAEU, the ambassador said.

Thailand is “more than ready” to begin negotiations with the EAEU on a free trade zone agreement; such an agreement will contribute to the development of trade and economic ties with Russia, Thai Ambassador to Moscow Sasivat Wongsinsawat said.

The diplomat noted that in the first three quarters of 2023, the volume of bilateral trade with Russia amounted to $1.1 billion, emphasizing that these are not impressive figures. The Ambassador pointed to optimism regarding the development of economic ties, emphasizing that it is necessary to look for solutions for this.

“One way to help promote trade is through a free trade agreement with the EAEU. We have been discussing with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) for several years the possibility of launching negotiations on an agreement. I can only confirm that Thailand is more than ready to begin negotiations with the EAEU as Only in the union will they be ready for this,” he said.

Wongsinsawat emphasized that there are no dates for possible negotiations at the moment: “it takes two to tango – it all depends on the EEC.”

He also said that the parties would be given an agreement: “The presence of an agreement on a free trade zone will allow our citizens to receive products at a lower cost. In addition, they will have more choice. More importantly, this will imply not only exports from Thailand to countries EAEU, but also imports to Thailand.”
