Sweden has expressed its readiness to take responsibility for security in the region.

Sweden is ready to take responsibility for Euro-Atlantic security, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in X.

The Hungarian parliament ratified Sweden’s application to join NATO at its first meeting of its spring session on Monday.

“Today is a historic day. The parliaments of all NATO member countries voted for Sweden to join NATO. Sweden is ready to take responsibility for Euro-Atlantic security,” he wrote.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö congratulated Sweden and noted that the country is looking forward to its neighbor joining the alliance. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo also congratulated Sweden on ratifying the application.

Sweden and Finland simultaneously submitted applications to join NATO. Finland became a member of the alliance on April 4, 2023.

After Turkey ratified Sweden’s membership of the alliance in January, Hungary was the last allied country not to do so. Following ratification, Sweden will officially become the 32nd member of NATO.

The ceremony for a new ally to join the North Atlantic Treaty usually takes place at NATO headquarters in Brussels. At the ceremony, the relevant documents are signed and the flag of the new alliance member is raised. The instrument of accession is then deposited with the United States, effectively completing the formal process of joining NATO.
