The German government, led by Olaf Scholz, agreed to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Kyiv.

“The decision has been made: Germany will supply Ukraine with Leopard 2 battle tanks,” the German media say.

According to information, we are talking about a company of tanks of the 2A6 model, which are in service with the Bundeswehr.

On Monday, Polish National Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said that Warsaw had asked Berlin for permission to transfer Leopard 2 tanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He also called on Germany to join the coalition of states providing Kyiv with military equipment.

For the supply of German equipment, countries must obtain permission from the Federal Republic of Germany to remove export restrictions. In addition to Germany, Poland and Finland, Spain, Greece and Denmark have Leopard.

Last week, a meeting of the NATO contact group was held at the Ramstein airbase, at which the issue of increasing military assistance to Ukraine was discussed. Its participants did not manage to come to a consensus on the supply of tanks. Until recently, Germany refrained from transferring this type of equipment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. At the same time, the UK announced the delivery of Challenger 2 tanks.
