Romania intends to conclude an agreement with the United States on the purchase of 54 Abrams tanks in the most modern modification, the contract value is estimated at a billion dollars, the press service of the country’s Ministry of Defense reported.

In April, the Romanian government submitted to parliament an application for the purchase of 54 Abrams tanks from the US authorities, the press service of the Ministry of Defense reported.

“The Department of National Defense welcomes the notification of the US Congress on the sale of 54 Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 battle tanks to Romania… The estimated value of the contract is approximately $1.07 billion,” a statement published on the website of the Romanian Ministry of Defense says.

The department clarified that the combat vehicles that will enter service with the Romanian ground forces will be supplied in the most modern modification. To ensure the security of supplies, the Romanian Ministry of Defense will attract national experts to provide comprehensive logistics support.

Minister of National Defense Angel Tylvar emphasized in this context that the acquisition of tanks not only represents a great opportunity for the Romanian ground forces, but also demonstrates the excellent level of cooperation between Romania and the United States in the military field.

The increase in the budget of the Ministry of Defense to 2.5% of GDP created the conditions for the initiation of programs necessary to accelerate the modernization of the Romanian army.
