Portugal has refused to pay reparations for its colonial past.

The Portuguese government has refused to initiate a process to pay reparations for its colonial past and slavery, despite the president’s statement.

The government statement that there is no program of concrete action to pay compensation. It is emphasized that the government wants to “deepen relations, respect historical truth and increasingly intense and close cooperation based on the reconciliation of fraternal peoples.” It is also noted that the prime minister called relations with the former colonies “truly excellent” and mentioned cooperation in the fields of education, language, culture, health and economics.


The process of mass liberation of the peoples of Africa from colonialism began in the 60s of the last century. Portugal’s colonial empire at various times included Angola, Brazil, East Timor, Cape Verde and Mozambique, as well as parts of India.
