North Korea has warned that the Korean Peninsula is close to “the brink of nuclear war.”

The United States and South Korea are bringing tensions on the peninsula “to the brink of nuclear war,” the North Korean Foreign Ministry said.

“The US belligerence has spurred military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, which have already plunged into a highly volatile situation close to the brink of nuclear war,” the ministry said.

A research report from the Institute of American Studies of the DPRK Foreign Ministry compared military tensions on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia to the night before the start of the 1950-53 Korean War, and accused the US and South Korea of ”delusional anti-communist military confrontation” and “rhetorical threats.”

The study warned that the war on the peninsula would “rapidly escalate into a global and thermonuclear war unprecedented in the world” and lead to “the most catastrophic and irreversible consequences” for peace and stability in the region and for everyone else.
