At least 53 people have died as a result of tribal clashes in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, ABC TV channel reports, citing local police.

“Police in Papua New Guinea say at least 53 people have been killed in a massacre in the country’s highlands,” the channel said in a statement.

According to police, the incident occurred in Enga province. It is believed that the victims were ambushed and then shot dead, which has already caused a serious escalation of inter-tribal clashes in the region.
