Japan called for an expansion of the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions.

The Japanese government is aware of the statement of the Russian Ministry of Defense about the shelling of a group of Russian journalists by Ukraine, adheres to the position on the need to expand the number of countries that have acceded to the Convention on the Prohibition of Cluster Munitions, Deputy Secretary General of the Japanese Cabinet Yoshihiko Isozaki said during a press conference.

“We are aware that on July 22 the Russian Ministry of Defense made a statement about the shelling with the use of cluster munitions by the armed forces of Ukraine, as a result of which four Russian journalists were injured,” he stressed.


According to Isozaki, “Japan’s position is that we consider it important that as many countries as possible join the Convention.”


At the same time, the Deputy Secretary General noted that Japan, together with other G7 countries, would continue to strongly condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
