India has surpassed China in terms of population.

India has overtaken China in terms of population by 2.9 million people, according to Indian media, citing data from the United Nations Population Fund.

According to the fund, India has a population of 1.4286 billion while China has a population of 1.4257 billion.

The Foundation noted that 25% of India’s population is in the 0 to 14 age group, 18% is in the 10 to 19 age group, 26% is in the 10 to 24 age group, and 68% is in the 15 to 64 age group and 7% over 65.

At the same time, 17% of the Chinese population belongs to the age group from 0 to 14 years old, 12% – to the age group from 10 to 19 years old, 18% – to the group from 10 to 24 years old, 69% – to the group from 15 to 64 years old and 14% over 65.


China is said to surpass India in terms of life expectancy. For women in China it is 82 years and for men it is 76, while in India it is 74 and 71 respectively.


According to the report, India’s demographic diversity provides unique opportunities for gain among the country’s states.

“Different states are at different stages of the demographic transition and an aging population in southern India can meet their labor needs with a larger share of the younger population in the northern and eastern parts of the country through favorable interstate migration policies,” the report of the fund says.
