In Bulgaria residents may be punished for not using gas

Residents of Bulgaria may be punished for not using gas due to long-term agreements with Bulgargaz.

Gas consumers in Bulgaria are in a very difficult situation, as they have signed annual contracts for fixed consumption volumes. This means that sanctions may be imposed for non-use of gas, the publication noted.

“At the moment, there is no shortage of gas volumes. We even have surpluses, but this should not be reassuring. The market will cope with providing itself with volumes. The problem is the price you have to pay for this gas,” said Kiril Temelkov, Deputy Chairman of the Bulgarian Gas Association.

According to him, the reduction of gas consumption in Bulgaria by 15%, as required by the European Commission, will happen by itself. Because of high fuel prices, people will simply save money. At the same time, the situation with high prices can last up to two years. However, in this case, the state should help with compensation during this difficult period.

On August 22, Minister of Energy of the Technical Government of Bulgaria Rosen Hristov, at a briefing following a meeting of the crisis headquarters on energy problems, said that his country intends to hold talks with Gazprom Export on restoring gas supplies to the country.
