Greece arrests two men on suspicion of spying

Two Greek men have been arrested on suspicion of spying against Greece, police said late on Saturday. The arrest took place on Rhodos island, which lies very close to Turkey, Reuters reported.

The Greece authorities haven’t specified on whose behalf the suspects were allegedly spying. One of them worked at a consulate on the island Rhodos, while another person was an employee of a passenger ferry which services a route between the two neighbouring islands, Rhodes and Kastellorizo, police said in a statement.

Both islands lie close to the Turkish coast, the experts said.

According to the police report, one of the suspects was accused of photographing movements of Greek armed forces in the Aegean Sea. Both men were arrested but are not in custody pending investigation, as is the norm in Greece.

Over the years, the neighbouring nations, Greece and Turkey, have a long-standing dispute over explorations rights in the Mediterranean Sea. That territory is considered to be rich in energy resources.

In August, the tensions flared up when Ankara sent a seismic explorations ship in waters claimed by Greece.
