Dodon fears that Kyiv may open a second front in Transnistria.

Former President of Moldova Igor Dodon expressed concern that in the event of unfavorable developments for Ukraine, Kyiv may have a desire to open a second front on the territory of Transnistria.

“We are afraid that under some scenarios that are unfavorable for Kyiv, someone will want to open a second front in Transnistria,” Dodon told reporters.

In his opinion, Moldova should solve the problem of Transnistria, and not build up military power.

“There are several important points here. Transnistria is part of Moldova, and if, God forbid, the Ukrainians start doing something, everyone will have to condemn the aggression against Moldova. Such a step without the consent of Maia Sandu and the leadership of Moldova is impossible. I don’t think that at this stage, the authorities are ready to take this step – to publicly come out and say: “Ukrainians, let’s solve the problem of Transnistria,” Dodon noted.

Transnistria, 60% of whose residents are Russian and Ukrainian, sought secession from Moldova even before the collapse of the USSR, fearing that in the wake of nationalism Moldova would join Romania. In 1992, after a failed attempt by the Moldavian authorities to solve the problem by force, Transnistria became virtually a territory beyond the control of Chisinau.
