Britain and the US will extend the mutual defense treaty.

Britain and the United States plan to indefinitely extend the 1958 mutual defense treaty, which provides for military cooperation between the countries in the field of nuclear weapons.

The treaty governs the sharing of technology between their nuclear weapons programs as both countries embark on costly modernization of their deterrent forces.

The agreement, which was last extended for ten years in 2014, expires in December. It involves the exchange of nuclear technology and information, but does not include the transfer of nuclear weapons or control over them.

The new version of the treaty was officially recommended by the governments of the United States and Great Britain, but is subject to legislative ratification in both countries. In Britain, the updated treaty will be automatically ratified if neither house of Parliament passes a resolution against ratification within 21 sitting days.
