Biden announces US military involvement in Taiwan defense

The United States is ready for military participation in the defense of Taiwan “in the event of an invasion,” President Joe Biden said at a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo.

The American leader answered in the affirmative to the corresponding question of the journalist, explaining that “these are the obligations” that America has assumed.

“We remain committed to maintaining the peace and security of the Taiwan Strait and intend to ensure that its status quo is not changed unilaterally,” Biden added.

At the same time, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a briefing that Beijing expresses “strong dissatisfaction and strong protest in connection with the US statements.” He stressed that Taiwan is an integral part of China and the country will take “decisive action to protect its sovereignty and security interests.”

Wang Wenbin urged Washington to abide by the “one China principle” and the joint Sino-US communiqué, and fulfill its obligations not to support Taiwan’s independence. The US authorities should be careful what they say and do on the Taiwan issue and not send false signals to separatist forces in Taiwan, the diplomat added.
