A group of congressmen from both parties will investigate the assassination attempt on Trump.

A bipartisan group of congressmen will investigate the failed assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, the investigation will be led by seven Republicans and six Democrats, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a joint statement.

“The House of Representatives will vote this week on a resolution to approve the task force and its members. The task force will consist of seven Republicans and six Democrats,” Johnson and Jeffries said in a statement.

The tasks of congressmen as part of the investigation will be to clarify the circumstances of the assassination attempt on Trump and the mistakes made by law enforcement officers. During the investigation, those responsible for failing to ensure security at the event will be held accountable. Based on the results of the work of the task force, they will also present recommendations on reforms of public services and the implementation of necessary legislative changes.

On Monday, US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, whose subordinates were tasked with protecting Trump on the day of the assassination, tried to assure congressmen during the hearing that she had nothing to hide. However, lawmakers from both parties agreed that they had no confidence in her or her department. Cheatle also admitted that the assassination attempt on Trump was the biggest failure of the US Secret Service in decades. She emphasized that she takes full responsibility for the actions of subordinate employees.

At Trump’s campaign speech in Pennsylvania on July 13, a shooting occurred, the ex-president was wounded in the ear, one of the spectators was killed, and two others were critically injured. The US Secret Service said it had killed a suspect who fired several shots towards the stage. He was hiding on the roof of a production building about 100 meters from the stage – outside the area where the event was held.
