US authorities have requested the deployment of a radar system to search for drones.

US officials have requested the deployment of a radar system used in the conflict in Ukraine to track and investigate mysterious drones that have recently been spotted in the skies in the northwest of the country, ABC News reports.

“New York Senator Chuck Schumer and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have asked the US Department of Homeland Security to deploy the Robin radar system to help investigators find out who is behind the suspected drones,” the channel said in a statement.

CEO Robin Radar USA Inc. Chris Brost told ABC News that the Robin radar system was used in the conflict in Ukraine by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to detect Russian armed drones. Brost said Robin can distinguish drones from manned aircraft, track their trajectory in real time and transmit data to a laptop with a 360-degree 3D view of the airspace.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have already deployed infrared cameras and drone detection technology to ensure that suspected drones flying over the New Jersey and New York areas do not pose a threat, the TV channel said, citing a law enforcement source.

US President-elect Donald Trump previously called for shooting down mysterious drones that are being observed by US residents.

Earlier, the White House said that federal authorities cannot determine what kind of drones residents of the American state of New Jersey have been seeing in the sky for several weeks. Law enforcement officials are studying the issue, but can only say unequivocally that the situation does not pose a threat to national or public security, and the activity is not malicious or criminal, a representative of the current administration said.

Reports of drones over New Jersey have attracted the attention of authorities, and the FBI said it has been receiving tips from the public for weeks about clusters of drones over the state. Local leaders demanded that federal agencies look into what was happening, since the state is home to military and infrastructure facilities and even the property of President-elect Donald Trump, and drones allegedly disappear as soon as they begin to be monitored.

The Pentagon previously said the activity in the skies over New Jersey did not come from foreign rivals. Later, objects began to appear over other states.
