A complex of facilities to accommodate a NATO brigade will be built in Bulgaria.

A complex of facilities to house a multinational NATO brigade is planned to be built in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) reports, citing a statement by Bulgarian Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov.

As the agency notes, residential, educational and sports facilities will be located in the Kabyle Military District near the city of Yambol in the southeast of the country. BTA emphasizes, citing the minister, that any ammunition that will be used will be stored in warehouses “outside populated areas and barracks areas.”

“There are no plans to store either ammunition or other hazardous materials (in the complex),” the minister said.

According to BTA, the NATO brigade will number about three thousand. Bulgaria is currently negotiating with NATO’s logistics and procurement agency to determine the cost of the construction project.

BTA also notes that in March almost three thousand signatures were collected against the deployment of a NATO brigade near Yambol. The collection of signatures was initiated by the local coalition “Left!”
