Police in Mozambique used tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters over the presidential election results, AFP reports.

Mozambique police used tear gas and rubber bullets on Saturday to disperse protests in several cities over a disputed presidential election.

The agency reported “hundreds” of protesters in the capital Maputo, about 500 in the northern Mozambique city of Nampula and “more than a hundred” in the town of Namialu.

Health organizations in Mozambique reported on Wednesday at least 10 deaths from gun violence and shootings that have accompanied post-election protests across the country. Amid the protests, the operation of social networks and instant messengers Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp in Mozambique has been limited since October 31.

On October 9, general elections were held in Mozambique. According to preliminary results, Daniel Chapu, a representative of the ruling Frelimo party, is leading among the candidates for the presidency. The independent candidate Mondlane, among others, also took part in the presidential elections. He expressed disagreement with the preliminary results and called for mass civil disobedience.
