Armenia has ratified provisions on the delimitation of the border with Azerbaijan.

Armenia has ratified provisions on the delimitation of the border with Azerbaijan.

At a meeting on Wednesday, the National Assembly of Armenia ratified the provision on joint activities of commissions on delimiting the border with Azerbaijan,  Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan said.

“67 deputies voted for the ratification of the provision on joint activities of the commission (of Armenia) on the delimitation of the state border and border security between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan and the commission (of Azerbaijan) on the delimitation of the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia. The decision was made,”  Simonyan said.

Only deputies from the ruling Civil Contract party took part in the voting; the opposition factions “Armenia” and “I Have the Honor” boycotted it.

On September 5, the Armenian government approved the ratification of the regulation signed on August 30 on the joint activities of the Armenian and Azerbaijani commissions on delimiting the border between the two countries. The document was sent to the Constitutional Court to determine the compliance of its points with the Constitution of Armenia, with subsequent transfer to parliament for ratification. On September 26, the Constitutional Court considered the obligations enshrined in the regulation constitutional.

The regulations provide for the organization of work on delimitation, the adoption of relevant instructions and documents, the creation of a protocol – descriptions of sections of the state border, the drawing up of a map of the appropriate scale, the activities of expert groups, and development. In the delimitation process, it is planned to use relevant cartographic documents, regulatory and other legally valid documents, which creates the opportunity to consolidate the international legal status of the state border of Armenia at the bilateral level, the resolution notes.

In 2022, Yerevan and Baku, through the mediation of Russia, the United States and the EU, began discussing a future peace treaty. At the end of May 2023, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Yerevan is ready to recognize the sovereignty of Azerbaijan within Soviet borders, that is, together with Karabakh.
