Bundeswehr fighters practiced using bombs over Alaska.

Crews of Tornado fighter jets practiced dropping GBU-54 laser-guided precision bombs as part of the Pacific Skies 24 exercise in Alaska, a German Air Force spokesman said.

During the exercises, for the first time in many years, the fighters descended to a minimum flight altitude of 30 meters, rising only immediately before the attack. During the exercise, the dropping of laser-guided precision bombs GBU-54 was practiced.

“We bought the Tornado in the 1980s specifically so that it could fly under enemy radar. This means it can remain virtually undetected by enemy air defenses for long periods of time,” a German air force spokesman said.

As part of Pacific Skies 24, more than 30 fighter aircraft, helicopters, transport aircraft and tanker aircraft will take part in five individual maneuvers in Alaska, Japan, Australia, India and Hawaii. The exercises will last until mid-August.
