A deadly hurricane hits Texas

At least four people died in the city of Houston in the US state of Texas as a result of a hurricane that hit the region, and about a million consumers were left without electricity, CBS reported, citing local authorities.

According to the fire service, two people died as a result of falling trees, and another tragic incident occurred due to a “crane that was knocked over by the wind.”

“We have a storm with 100 mph winds equivalent to Hurricane Ike, causing significant damage downtown,” Mayor John Whitmire told reporters.

Flights were suspended at Houston’s two main airports due to the weather. Sustained winds of up to 60 mph were recorded at Bush Intercontinental Airport.

As of Thursday evening, about a million customers remained without power in Texas, more than 800,000 of them in Houston.
