The creation of a nuclear umbrella in the European Union to replace the American one may become a subject of discussion at the European level, said Katharina Barli, Deputy President of the European Parliament (EP) and candidate for the EU elections from the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).
⠀
“On the way to a European army, this could also be a topic (of discussion),” she said when asked whether the European Union needs nuclear warheads.
⠀
The politician recalled that now the nuclear deterrent forces for Europe are in the hands of NATO.
⠀
“As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg rightly noted, it remains in the interests of the Americans to provide them to a significant extent. In light of the latest statements by Donald Trump, this can no longer be counted on,” Barley said.

If the United States in the future ceases to be a supplier of weapons to Ukraine, Europe will have to take on this responsibility, noted the Deputy Chairman of the European Parliament. According to her, to create a common EU army, it is necessary to implement the European Sky Shield air defense system and coordinate the purchase of weapons.

Late last week, former US President Donald Trump said that he would not stop Russia from attacking NATO countries if they refused to fulfill financial obligations to the alliance.
