The head of one of Nigeria’s largest banks was killed in a helicopter crash in the United States.

The chief executive officer of the Nigerian commercial bank Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, his wife and son were killed in a helicopter crash in the United States, World Trade Organization Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who served as Nigeria’s finance minister from 2011 to 2015, said on social media.

“Extremely saddened to learn of the terrible death of Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Bank Group, his wife, son and Bimbo Ogunbanjo in a helicopter crash. My deepest condolences to the Wigwe family, the Ogunbanjo family, the staff and management of the Access Bank Group and my partner Herbert’s younger brother Aigboje Aig-Imukhuede,” she wrote.


The Eurocopter EC 130 helicopter, owned by the excursion company Orbic Air, crashed on the evening of February 9 on the border of California and Nevada. There were six people on board, none of them survived.
