The Iraqi authorities regard the shelling of the city of Erbil by Iran as an act of aggression, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“The Government of the Republic of Iraq expressed its strong condemnation of Iranian aggression against the city of Erbil, expressed in the bombing of residential buildings with ballistic missiles, which led to civilian casualties. <…> The Government of the Republic of Iraq considers such behavior an aggression against the sovereignty of Iraq and the security of the Iraqi people,” – the message says.

Baghdad warned that it would take all legal measures in response to the attack, including filing a complaint with the UN Security Council.


The Iraqi prime minister ordered the formation of a committee headed by the national security adviser to investigate the aggression and collect information that would support Iraq’s position at the international level.

The Foreign Ministry promised to prove the falsehood of the statements of “the parties behind these <…> actions.”

On Tuesday night in the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, Erbil, explosions occurred in the area of ​​the US Consulate and the international airport. Four people were killed and six were injured.


An elite unit of the Iranian Armed Forces, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, claimed responsibility for the attack. The IRGC said it fired several ballistic missiles at one of the main Mossad headquarters in Iraqi Kurdistan, destroying it.
