Deputy Foreign Minister of Syria Bassam al-Sabbah in an interview said that Syria is on the path to resuming diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia and is counting on their further development.

“I think that we are already on this path… We very much count on the development of these fraternal relations,” al-Sabbah said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly high-level week that ended in New York, answering a corresponding question.

Important aspects in this matter are the return of Syria to the League of Arab States and the participation of the country’s President Bashar al-Assad in the summit in Jeddah, al-Sabbah noted.
In April of this year, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad visited Saudi Arabia for the first time since the beginning of the civil war in 2011; following the visit, it was reported that the two countries intended to resume the work of their embassies.

In May, after a 12-year break, the foreign ministers of the League of Arab States approved the return of Syria to the regional organization. The summit of the Arab League member states, in which Syrian President Bashar al-Assad took part for the first time in many years, was held on May 19 in Jeddah. In the text of the summit declaration, the leaders of the Arab League countries expressed the hope that Syria’s renewed participation in the organization will contribute to preserving the integrity of this country.
