NATO has no information that the drone incident in Romania was a “deliberate attack by Russia,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said at a joint meeting of the foreign affairs, defense and security committees of the European Parliament.

“The Romanian authorities informed about the discovery of the alleged drone fragments on the NATO border and with Ukraine, the investigation continues. <…> We have no information that would indicate a deliberate attack by Russia, we are waiting for the results of the investigation,” he said.

The day before, NATO’s statement on the incident in Romania said that the alliance over the past year “significantly increased its presence in the Black Sea region“, continues to closely monitor the situation in this country and maintain close contact with Bucharest.

On Wednesday, the Romanian television channel Antena-3, citing Defense Minister Angela Tylvar, reported that debris that could be parts of drones was found in the country. The head of the department emphasized that the objects do not pose a danger. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis demanded an urgent investigation.

Press Secretary of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleg Nikolenko wrote on social networks with reference to the border service that Russian drones allegedly fell and detonated on the territory of Romania. In response, the country’s Ministry of Defense reported that Moscow’s armament had never created “direct military threats to the national territory or territorial waters of Romania.”
