The SCO countries opposed the militarization of the information technology sector.

The countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization oppose the militarization of the sphere of information and communication technologies, according to the New Delhi declaration of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO member states published on Tuesday.

 

“Member states emphasize the key role of the UN in countering threats in the information space, creating a safe, fair and open information space built on the principles of respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries,” the document states.

 

The importance of ensuring equal rights for all countries to regulate the Internet and the sovereign right of states to manage it in their national segment is noted.

“Member states categorically oppose the militarization of information and communication technologies. They support the development of universal rules, principles and norms for the responsible behavior of states in this area, including welcome the launch of the development under the auspices of the UN of a comprehensive international convention on combating the use of ICT for criminal purposes” , – emphasized in the declaration.

At the same time, it is indicated that “member states will continue to cooperate within the framework of specialized negotiating mechanisms at the UN and at other international platforms.”
