Stoltenberg will remain as NATO Secretary General for another year.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that he will remain in his post for another year, until October 1, 2024.

“I highly appreciate the decision of NATO allies to extend my powers as Secretary General until October 1, 2024,” he wrote on Twitter.

Thus, the powers of Stoltenberg, who has been in charge of the bloc since October 2014, have been extended for the fourth time.

Earlier, Stoltenberg said that he did not plan to work as NATO Secretary General after September 2023. At the same time, the media reported that he could not find a successor over the past year due to disagreements between the allies, so it was decided to keep his post.

Stoltenberg was supposed to leave the chair of the Secretary General on October 1, 2022, however, in March 2022, the leaders of the alliance countries during the summit decided to extend his mandate until September 30, 2023 against the backdrop of events around Ukraine.

The longest-serving NATO Secretary General in the history of the alliance was the Dutchman Josef Luns, who has been in office for 13 years since 1971. Stolteneberg with a nine-year term is still in second place.
