Hungarian Foreign and Economic Relations Minister Péter Szijjarto said he and his new Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, had agreed to keep each other informed about steps taken to ratify Sweden’s NATO membership.

“We agreed to inform each other about the steps that we will take in the future together with Turkey on this issue,” Szijjarto said in an interview with the Turkish state agency Anadolu, saying that he had met with a new colleague.

Szijjarto stressed that the Hungarian government supports Sweden’s membership in NATO, but the final decision belongs to parliament, taking into account the “insults” inflicted by the Swedish government on his country.

He also recalled that Sweden accuses Hungary that it “does not have democracy and it is turning into a dictatorship”, and noted that Budapest is constantly subjected to criticism, accusations and claims from Swedish politicians.

According to the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, such criticism is a good reason to disapprove of Sweden’s membership in NATO.

Szijjarto accused Sweden of interfering in the internal affairs of Hungary and stressed that Budapest “never interferes in the internal affairs of other countries.” Earlier, he stated that the United States and other European countries also tried to interfere in the internal affairs of Hungary.
