The first session of the main deliberative body of the PRC – the 14th National Committee of the People’s Political Consultative Council of China (CPPCC) officially ended its work on Saturday.

The final meeting of the session was attended by the entire leadership of China, including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The annual session opened on March 4 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and lasted seven days, during which time the session participants considered the report on the work of the CPPCC Standing Committee over the past 5 years and the report on the work of submitting proposals, and also elected a chairman, vice chairman, head of the secretariat and members of the Standing Committee of the 14th People’s Political Consultative Council of China.

Wang Huning, a member of the standing committee of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, who oversees issues of ideology, propaganda and organizational work within the party, was elected chairman of the 14th CPPCC CC.

The CPPCC is composed of representatives of various political parties and social groups, business circles and major religious denominations, as well as cultural figures. The CPPCC does not pass laws, but its members discuss key development issues at the annual session, after which they submit their proposals to legislators from the National People’s Congress (NPC).
