The Bundeswehr (German armed forces) urgently needs new equipment, the country needs more armored vehicles, warships and artillery, now the Baltic Sea is the most vulnerable in the entire NATO zone, said Friedrich Merz, leader of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.

“The Bundeswehr urgently needs new equipment. We have created all the conditions for this in Parliament with the help of a special fund. That was nine months ago, and practically nothing has happened,” Merz said.

He added that it is necessary to reorganize the allied and national defense. “Germany needs more armored vehicles, more warships, more artillery. The Baltic Sea is the most vulnerable sea in the entire NATO zone,” Merz stressed.

The Bundestag and the Bundesrat in June last year, by a majority vote, supported the February initiative of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to create a special fund for the Bundeswehr for 100 billion euros. Thus, the armed forces of Germany, according to the chancellor, can be considered the largest regular army in Europe.
