Cuba’s important political vacancy is filled, the long-serving tourism minister Manuel Marrero became the new prime minister. For the first time, since 1976, the new person took office on Saturday.
Appointment of the new PM was duly approved by the political bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, said President Diaz-Canel, introducing the 56-year-old Marrero. On Saturday, he became the first prime minister for over forty years, as the island state resurrected a post last held by Fidel Castro.
According to the experts, Marrero is coming to the job to implement and manage. His appointment is an integral part of the process of decentralization and generational change in the political life of Cuba.
Immediately after his presentation, Marrero received a handshake from former president Raul Castro, the leader of the Communist Party.
Marrero began his career in government in 1999, later, he served as tourism minister from 2004, late in revolutionary hero Fidel Castro’s administration, continuing in the post under Fidel’s brother Raul and the current president.
Marrero’s wide-ranging experience holds in Cuban development strategy
The position of prime minister was last held by Fidel Castro in 1976, later, the post was abolished. The new PM’s wide-ranging experience in tourism and working with investors will definitely help the Cuban government in developing countries’ economy and easing tensions with Washington.
Introducing the new prime minister on Saturday, President Diaz-Canel said that 2019 was “a year full of challenges, tension and aggression” by the White House. The United States carried out a “brutal, insane” tightening of its long-running embargo, but “we are alive,” Diaz-Canel added.
